Autistic empathy?

Daily Post: Write about anything you’d like. Somewhere in your post, include the sentence, “I heard the car door slam, and immediately looked at the clock

I often think that there is a reason why I understand autism so well. Am far too old now though, to be able to get any kind of formal diagnosis.

Let me give you an example. Other half was working nights, I didn’t expect him back till image7:30am. I am woken at 1:30am. I heard a car door slam and immediately looked at the clock. At first I didn’t think anything of it, till the front door opened. I set the house alarm when I am home alone, and I heard it start to beep. I am wide awake. Am I being burgled? I listened carefully. I didn’t panic, I sat calmly listening, to what was happening downstairs. The beep stopped. I thought some more. I couldn’t have been burgled, the alarm had just been un-set. OH must be back early. So, I called out, and he answered. I could go back to sleep.

A normal woman, home alone, might perhaps have panicked, either screamed, shouted run downstairs, picked up the phone, who knows. I was conscious of the fact that I had to think for a minute and work out what was happening before I made my next move. The process felt like it took a minute or so, but I didn’t feel panicked. I felt like I just had t wait for my brain to process the information.

Imagine, that was how your brain worked all the time. Except the world will not always wait for your thought processes. Yes, then you might feel a bit more panicked.
